Environment

For the Space part of the group project we looked at two environments, one simple environment which was either silent or had basic sound, and one fully immersive environment.

We decided to go with horror games for both of our examples as thses games rely on the environment and sound to make them scary so a lot of thought have to be put into these sorts of games.

For the first 'simple' environment wechose Resident Evil 1. For it's time the game was very intuitive and used it's simple environments effectivly to scare it's audience, despite the now dated graphics the game had a very firghtening atmosphere. This was partly becuase of the background noises used.

For the fully immerisive example, we chose Amnesia The Dark Descent. The game is terrifying due to the dark environments the player must run though. The environments are so well done that even in the rooms that are lit the player still feels vunerable.

character representation

For our group representation we looked at a female and male character, both looking at low polygon models of them and comparing them to a higher poly model.

The first we looked at was Lara Croft:

The second being Chris Redfield

The basics

The definition of representation is:

1. The act of representing or the state of being represented.
2. Something that represents, as:
a. An image or likeness of something.
b. An account or statement, as of facts, allegations, or arguments.
c. An expostulation; a protest.
d. A presentation or production, as of a play.

(Taken from thefreedictionary.com)

Representation is describing or portraying something in a particular way or as being of a certain nature.

Next up is Space. In this case the definition would be: An area provided for a particular purpose.

From this I can understand that what we are doing is to research the representations of certain characters based on gender ethinicty or even age and to research the environments those characters are usually placed in.
